Sewing a waistband for a skirt is simple once you get the hang of it. This tutorial is to show you how I make the waistbands for my skirts. I'm not a professional seamstress by any means so bare with me as I try to explain the steps.
I skipped the part where you cut your skirt and gather it, however if you don't know how to cut out a skirt pattern then here are some very helpful tutorials. There are two parts of the tutorial, the second part includes another way to make a waistband. You can try either one, and see which one is easier for you to follow.
1. Measure your waist and add 2 inches more to that measurement (for the button and the seams). Then use the same measurement for the fusible web and cut it out, follow the ironing instructions on the back of the fusible web package and then iron it on to the fabric. Wait a little for the fusible web to cool off.
2. Next fold the fabric in half and iron, also iron 1/2 of an inch on each side as pictured above.

What you'll need:
Scissors
ruler
Iron
Fabric marker or chalk
Fabric
The picture above shows the fusible web ironed to the fabric.
The waistband above is ironed in half.
3. Next sew the ends of the waistband, turn it over and iron it before pinning it to the skirt.
4. Next, insert the gathered skirt, which should already have a zipper sewn in it (here's a youtube tutorial on how to sew a zipper). Pin the skirt making sure that both ends of the waistband are at the same level on both sides.
5. Make sure that the waistband is pinned in securely and nothing is sticking out on either side.
6. Sew it carefully, keep the pins in place and remove them as you sew little by little. Always remove your pins before sewing, sewing over the pins can damage your sewing machine. You can also do all of the sewing by hand, it takes time but if you don't have a sewing machine it can still be done.
7. Last sew a buttonhole and a button. I have a setting in my sewing machine that automatically sews buttonholes, but if your sewing machine doesn't have that setting you can also do it by hand.

Good job.... sure can tell your a teacher! I can't imagine anyone having trouble following this tutorial! As always... you look wonderful... we have snow here... and your outfit would fit right in with the weather... 'cept maybe a bit warmer tights! LoL...
