Refashion: Pocket Purr-fect Skirt

Ever since I saw this ModCloth kitty pocket dress (here and here) I started "coveting" it. However, because I cannot afford a $367.99 dress and I don't see ModCloth sending it my way any time soon, I had to take matters into my own hands. It was a very easy to do, this thrifted skirt was the purr-fect candidate. Get it? purrfect? (silence and cricket sound) yeah...okay never mind that, let's go on to the refashion shall we?

The pocket was very easy to make, maybe I'll make a tutorial if you're interested?

Pink & Black

Today I almost had a "heart attack" at work when a teary, but not worried, little boy came to me and said "Teacher I had had this up my nose all day long" showing me a piece of a pencil's eraser, "I just got it out when I blew my nose" (!!!). I'm so glad he was alright, he didn't tell me anything until the end of the day. I made sure we turned that into a learning lesson: Never put anything inside your nose. Now that I think about it, it was actually pretty funny. It reminded me of me when I was 5 years old and stuck a bean up my nose and then we couldn't get it out so my mom had to take it out with some tweezers.
Jewelry lovers be proud of me, I thrifted this silver necklace for $2.99, it was dirty and sticky and the hook was broken, nothing too challenging for this refashionista.

Florals, wine and gray

Did anyone go Black Friday shopping today? I wanted to, but there's really nothing I want to buy so I skipped it. I do need to work on that Christmas list though. I'm such a procrastinator when it comes to Christmas shopping, I'll probably be one of those people who waits to buy presents till 10 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Today's plans include more sewing, a little bit of movie watching and plenty of tamale eating at my mom's house. Hope you have a good one!
No cat was hurt during this shot! ^_^

Refashion: Little Black Dress

I love Laura Ashley's dresses, they are good refashioning material and LA knows how to pick quality fabric and nice prints. This is the third Laura Ashley dress I've refashioned (see here and here). I picked up this dress at the thrift store for .25 cents, great deal! I almost left it behind, I'm so glad I didn't, the fabric is black corduroy. For this refashion I took off the shoulder pads, took in on the sides, sleeves and shoulders, I shortened the length and made the sleeves 3/4. I love the new dress, it looks like a 50's dress. I wore it today for our Thanksgiving dinner. It fit just right so there was no room for to me indulge in gluttony which is a good thing, last year I had a real bad indigestion after our Thanksgiving dinner.

It has pockets!!
It also has pleats in the front and two buttons in the collar.
Hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving!

DIY: Elongate a tight fabric belt

One problem I often have when I'm thrifting is that most vintage things I find are too small for me. That, however, doesn't stop me from buying it if I like it a lot and I can figure out a way to make it work. Today I was lucky to find this vintage belt, however it was too small for me, I tried sucking in my gut but still no luck, after much thought my creative light bulb went on and I got an idea on how to make this pretty belt fit me.
Here is the before...oh so tight.
First I took the loop off.
Then I got some canvas fabric I had around, measured and cut it to the width of the belt.
I ironed fusible interface to the canvas fabric for extra sturdiness. Here it is already stitched and ironed.
I put the end of the belt inside the extension.
 Sewed it together...
I put the belt loop back on and sewed it closed.
And now I have a belt that fits.
 Soon to be refashioned...
Stay tuned. ^_^

Plaid & navy blue

Getting ready for the turkey anyone? I'm enjoying my days off from work and I'm so grateful to have a job where I can have the whole Thanksgiving week off. Yesterday I volunteered, along with some friends, to decorate the east wing of our church, we decorated the Christmas tree and entrance, it was fun. Tonight I'm volunteering to decorate our church's gym for Thursday's apartment ministry, Thanksgiving dinner. In between I'm trying to get as much sewing and thrifting as I can, I found some good stuff today. Gotta stay busy!
It's been raining and cooling down a bit, I'm glad I bought these boot liners, they are very warm and they don't make your feet sweaty.

Sunday Best: Teal and Tea Rose

Yesterday I spent the day altering a coat and a cape with my mom, can't wait to show you the before and afters. This is what I'm wearing to church today, I like that it makes me look curvy! For a girl who has no curves (me), curves are something to get excited about. After church we'll be heading off to my cousin's house to celebrate my sister's birthday, I hope everyone has a delightful Sunday!
The necklace is an earring a friend gave me, she took them apart and made them a necklace.
Giving pink lipstick a try.
The suede purple pump.
The miracle belt, gives the illusion I have a small waist.

Refashion: Florals for Fall

Last night I had some time on my hands so I decided to refashion this vintage skirt I bought at the thrift store, I paid $2.99 for it, it was a bit stiff but after washing it it was fine. The fabric is beautiful and the color is perfect for my favorite season (Fall!). For this skirt I made 4 pleats on each side, I also gathered the fabric in the middle and back section for some fullness and shortened it.

This is how I wore it to work.

Sunday Best: Ruffles and sequins

Happy Sunday everyone! Last night I was out at a Thanksgiving dinner with my friends from church, I rarely go out but my son had a sleepover at his cousin's house. It was really nice to have a little time for myself, my friends thought it was funny that I was amazed of how may cars where out on the road on a Saturday night (that tells you I don't go out much at night). This is what I wore to church today, I can't wait to wear more of my sequins, they've been patiently waiting for the cooler weather.
